Land Development
Grand River is a 3,100 acre multi-phased development including residential, retail and commercial office and recreation and is the sister project to Ross Bridge. Grand River is situated on the I-20 corridor, intersecting I-20 at exit 140, and is twelve minutes from Downtown Birmingham, Hwy. 280 and I-459. The development is anchored by Bass Pro Shops, scheduled to open in the Fall of 2008, and Barber Motorsports Museum and Park. Grand River is the first planned community in Alabama to be a registered member of the Audubon International Gold Signature Program and is currently working to earn designation as a Certifed Gold Audubon International Signature Sanctuary.
ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
To be designated as an Audubon International Gold Signature Sanctuary, Grand River partnered with Audubon International prior to the start of the project. Working together the Team developed
a comprehensive Environmental Master Plan in which every aspect of the community was examined – from architecture and sustainable community design concepts to indigenous plant
species, wildlife habitats, and conservation and natural resource management. This plan serves as the basis for our environmental “vision” or “roadmap” for the community and resulted in the adoption of specific principles and guidelines aimed at insuring long-term sustainability. These guiding principles will be woven throughout the fabric of the community to promote environmental stewardship now, and for generations to come.
PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABILITY
• Encourage resource management practices that have the greatest positive impact on plant and wildlife species, water, and the ecosystems that sustain life.
• Strive to use resources that are most easily renewed.
• Strive to reduce the use of resources that are difficult or impossible to renew.
• Encourage human activities and practices that conserve water and protect or enhance water quality on a local, regional, and global basis.
• Encourage human activities, practices, and land uses that support ecosystems that maintain and enhance biodiversity.
• Consider the geographic and ecological contexts in which our actions take place, and at the same time strive to manage resources within the natural limitations and opportunities defined by ecosystems and geographic boundaries.
• Promote environmental stewardship through long-term education and outreach initiatives aimed at increasing the awareness and understanding of the natural resources around us.
